Secret Relationship Of Science And Art (2015-03-26)
My interest in integrating literary art with visual art has a parallel of sorts in my fascination with the both science and art and their relationship to each other.
Which, of course, is what my Secret Agents trilogy is about.

Threats To Civilization (2015-03-29)
Threats To Civilization (2015-03-29)
Art and science are my passions, and human accomplishment in these domains is what distinguishes us from other animals and best defines civilization. And the two belief systems most threatening to art and science are religious and ideological. They warp our emotions and inhibit our rationality. That would be my definition of ‘evil’, and religion and ideology are definitely evil. They’ve done far more harm to civilization than anything else you could name. (Sure, they’ve done some good as well, but that is very lightweight when weighed against the harm.)
Evil Religion (2015-03-30)
Evil Religion (2015-03-30)
In terms of damage to civilization, religion even trumps ideology. To pick just one example, consider wars. Even more senseless wars have been fought over differing religious beliefs than over ideological differences. People are quite willing to kill each other over disagreements about their specific superstitions—often even a tiny distinction between variations of a fundamentally shared superstition. (For example, Catholics and Protestants or Sunnis and Shiites.)
Artists and scientists have always been victimized by religious intolerance. Who consistently attacks with censorship and persecution our freedom of expression, that most basic of human rights and cornerstone of civilization? Who branded Galileo deserving to be burned at the stake for publishing his scientific findings? Who put a contract on the life of Salman Rushdie for publishing an irreverent novel?
If there were any point to it, what I’d pray for is the end of religious belief.
Evil Ideology (2015-03-31)
Evil Ideology (2015-03-31)
Just as with religion, it is completely fair to label as ‘evil’ all brands of it, although some variations are far more destructive than others. And, just as with religion, true believers in any particular variety are only too willing to persecute those who prefer a different flavour.
The problem with ideological belief is that it is even harder to eradicate than religious conviction. And often it is implicit. One needn’t be a member of the American Democratic or Republican Party to subscribe to the party line. While I don’t think there is any doubt that overall the current Republican’s dogma is more harmful than the Democrat’s Dogma, all dogma prevents clear thinking and sound judgement.
Not too, too long ago most ‘liberals’ thought communism was a really good, humane idea.
