Psychological Disorders

The high level of stress found in a student can increase the chances of psychological disorders. Stone and Archer (as cited by Schweitzer, 1996) reported that the quantity of cases of psychopathology has increased among students in the past ten years. Sherer also stated that "40% of the clients seen in a university counselling service in the United States were rated as exhibiting depression of sufficient severity to interfere with optimal academic performance; 16% of these students were rated as posing some risk of suicide." Westefeld and Furr (as cited in Schweitzer, 1996) found that 81% of their student subjects had suffered from depression at least once since starting university. In Schweitzer's (1996) study the overall percentage of emotional distress was found to be 45%.
